The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the grandaddy of all personality tests, called “the best-known and most trusted personality assessment tool available today.” Developed during World War II by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers, it was originally meant to help find women suitable jobs while their husbands were away. The two created the test based around the personality types theorized by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. It determines your personality with four “temperaments” and combines the end result to place you in one of sixteen personality types.

5 Ways to Tell if a Personality Test is Accurate

There are thousands of personality tests on the internet today, but not all of them are trustworthy. Here are five ways to tell if a personality test is accurate and worth listening to.

1) Does it have a history?
Many personality tests and personality type indicators have been around for decades and have scientific backing. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Test are two such examples. Always look up the history of the test you’re taking. If a personality test has no real theory or credibility behind it, it’s probably not very accurate.

2) Is it comparing you to something?
If a personality test says “You’re an orange!” or “You’re Johnny Depp!” it’s probably just for fun. Real, accurate personality tests will have their own personality type categories and won’t need to use tenuous comparisons to tell you more about yourself. It’s okay if it lists examples of people who were similar to your type, just so long as they’re not the main result.

3) Does it ask you about your behavior?
The best personality tests will base your results on your behavior, not your likes and dislikes or personal history. If a test asks you more about your favorite color or favorite foods than how you act in certain situations, it’s probably not very accurate.

4) Is the personality type description detailed?
Accurate personality tests that have had a lot of thought put into them will have very detailed results. The results for the Myers-Briggs Personality Test can be a thousand words long. If the test you’re taking offers only one or two vague sentences about your results, it’s not a good idea to trust it.

5) Does it give you advice?
If a personality test gives you life advice, it may not be very accurate. The best tests only offer insights into your personality type and tell you about your strengths and weaknesses. They don’t try to tell you how to use them.
